Serge Ibaka is a dominant defensive player who can also help you on the offensive end if he needs to.
The 27-year-old power forward spent the first six years of his NBA career playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to the Orlando Magic in the offseason last year. Ibaka’s contract expires in the Summer though and it looks like there isn’t much of a possibility of him resigning with the Magic.
This wouldn’t be ideal for Orlando as they would be watching their best player walk out the door for nothing. The problem is though, not a lot of teams would trade for Ibaka unless there was a good chance of him resigning with the team once again.
The reality is that we’ll see Ibaka being shipped elsewhere in the next few weeks running up to the trade deadline so here are 3 possible trade destinations for Serge Ibaka:
The Raptors are one of the top teams in the East and are just short of being title contenders, especially with how the Cavaliers are currently playing.
If Ibaka was added to the roster, the Raptors would have the last part of the puzzle - a dynamic power forward.
Ibaka would help tighten up the defense in Toronto and his shooting would be an asset to the Raptors. We could see a ‘Big 3’ of DeRozan, Lowry and Ibaka in Toronto - one that could really push Cleveland to their limits in a 7-game series!
For this to happen though the Raptors would have to give away players like Patrick Patterson and Pascal Siakam. The Raptors wouldn’t mind too much about that though as they would be bringing in a top-calibre player in Serge Ibaka.
Boston are another dominant force in the East but still lack that piece that would make them legitimate Championship contenders. If Ibaka was to go to Boston and link up with Al Horford and Isaiah Thomas that should be enough to push the Celtics into title contention.
The Celtics are already well established in the East but Ibaka moving to Boston would help the Celtics battle it out even more against the likes of the Toronto Raptors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
For this trade to happen the Celtics would probably have to give away Amir Johnson and Terry Rozier in the deal. I’m sure the Celtics front office wouldn’t mind trading these players away though in order to get Ibaka.
This is a trade that could definitely happen but we’ll just have to wait and see.
The Pacers have had a lackluster season so far and only sit in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference with a 25W-22L record.
The Pacers should be a top-tier team in the East with the likes of Paul George, Jeff Teague and Myles Turner on Indiana’s roster but that just hasn’t been the way it’s turned out. It could be time for the Pacers to look at adding a new player to the roster and that player could just be Serge Ibaka.
The man from the Congo would be a great fit with the Pacers and with both Ibaka and Turner together on the defensive end of the court we could see a great pairing between the two.
The Pacers could part ways with Monta Ellis in order to bring Ibaka to Indiana as I’m sure the Magic would be happy to add a veteran guard to the roster in order to bring on the younger players like Elfird Payton and Evan Fournier.
The likelihood of the situation is that we will be seeing Serge leave Orlando before the trade deadline in around 3 weeks time.
The question still remains though - Who will take the risk on ‘Air Congo’?
