Jimmy Butler watch continues. In a breaking report Monday afternoon, Espn’s Marc Stein stated that Cleveland is “trying to land Chicago’s Jimmy Butler.” This report comes as quite a surprise considering that the Cavs have the league’s highest payroll and, they are unlikely to have the assets Chicago desires. According to Stein, the Cavs “have been working on assembling multi-team trade scenarios.” Could a big multi-team deal be in the works? It definitely sounds like it. Going after Butler may also present the Cavs with the opportunity to move Kevin Love however, that is purely just speculation. Cleveland acquiring Jimmy Butler would make the Cavs an even scarier team.
Elsewhere around the league it sounds as though the Phoenix Suns, as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves also have interest in acquiring the Chicago star. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of, The Vertical, Chicago and Minnesota “made preliminary contact this week.” Out of the four possible teams that appear to be in the Butler sweepstakes, Minnesota might just make the most sense. Not only was Timberwolves Head Coach Tom Thibodeau Butler’s former coach in Chicago but, Minnesota also has a deep pool of young talent and, future draft picks that could be of value to Chicago. Karl Anthony-Towns along with Andrew Wiggins are likely untouchable however, one has to assume that everyone else could be made available. It is also worth noting that Minnesota also reportedly attempted to acquire Butler during the 2016 NBA Draft.
Lastly, according to K.C Johnson of, The Chicago Tribune the Phoenix Suns are “another team to watch.” This is not the first time the Suns have been linked to trying to make a pre-draft trade. Reports from early Monday claimed that the Suns had interest in trading up to select Lonzo Ball. As for trying to acquire Jimmy Butler, Phoenix may have just enough to stay in the race. Chicago could use a point guard and lucky for them, the Suns have Eric Bledsoe as well as, Brandon Knight. Along with boasting two solid floor generals, the Suns also have a higher first-rounder than the Timberwolves in this years draft. However, trading for Butler may not be the smartest move as the Suns already have Devin Booker on their roster. Adding another premier shooting guard in Jimmy Butler may do more harm than good for the development of Phoenix’s new young star.
With the 2017 NBA Draft now less than five days away things are starting to heat up. While Phoenix, Minnesota and, Cleveland may be trying to land Jimmy Butler do not forget about the Boston Celtics. Boston has also been heavily linked to Butler ever since the NBA trade deadline. Exciting times are upon us and you will not want to miss what could be coming. From what it sounds like, a blockbuster deal could occur as soon as this Thursday.
