It’s been one heck of a season for Knicks forward, Carmelo Anthony. Going from potential “super team” to now being one of the Easts most dysfunctional teams, it seems Carmelo and the Knicks may finally be ready to break up.
“The Knicks shopped Anthony in trade talks before the deadline and, barring an unforeseen change of course, remain committed to moving Anthony in the offseason, per sources.”
It seems that despite Carmelo’s public desire to stay, big time changes are coming to New York. Nobody knows exactly what that means yet, but one thing is seeming certain: The Knicks are moving on.
Phil Jackson has been no fan of Melo and has obviously wanted him out since day one. The All-Star forward, though, has consistently made it known he’d prefer to stay in the Big Apple. If presented with an unbelievable opportunity, however, reports indicate he’d likely bolt out the door in a heartbeat. That’s a “win-win” for both sides.
What would such an opportunity look like?
A chance to play on a great team, with his best friends. Or, in other words, the Clippers/Cavaliers. No doubt the price tag will not be terribly cheap, but the Knicks seem desperate to let their star go, and the asking price may be low enough to convince the Clips or Cavs to pull the trigger.
New York is headed for a rebuild, while Carmelo is headed for the hardware. A trade this summer would give each side what it wants.
They are clearly headed in their own directions. But whatever happens this summer, its clear that those directions will not involve each other. It’s time for a change. But for the first time in a long time, both the Knicks and Carmelo will have something they’ve lacked for a while: Hope.
