Celtics fans, you may want to hold off on burning those Isaiah Thomas jerseys. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers will seek “further compensation” before the mega deal between the two teams can be finalized. Reports broke Friday evening that the Cavaliers could potentially void the trade due to the results of Isaiah Thomas’ physical. However, it appears that now Cleveland will only be seeking further compensation.
However, if both teams mutually agree to extend the deadline, they can. Once the sides re-engage, Cavaliers officials may try to make the case that Boston undersold them on the scope of the Thomas injury, and more specifically, how soon Thomas could be prepared to play this season, league sources said. The sides did discuss and share information on Thomas's injury, sources said.
Because Thomas is in the final year of his contract -- which coincides with LeBron James' opt-out next summer -- Cleveland has an urgency to get Thomas on the court this year.
All along, Boston has believed it was clear in its assessment of Thomas' physical status and that information was communicated to the Cavaliers in the conversations before Tuesday's trade, league sources said. In a telephone conference call with reporters after the trade was announced, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge admitted that Thomas' physical condition played "some" role in trading him to Cleveland as part of the Irving package.
The two Eastern Conference powerhouses agreed on a deal that would send Kyrie Irving to Boston in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, a 2018 first round pick as well as, Ante Zizic. Voiding the deal would likely cause many problems for both teams. Disgruntled point guard Kyrie Irving would be right back at square one while Thomas and Crowder would certainly feel let down by the Celtics organization. Cleveland asking for “further compensation” may be the necessary move at this point in time.
Intense times are certainly upon us. As of this writing, it appears as though the two teams will attempt to potentially re-work the blockbuster trade but, that could all change in just a matter of hours. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops.
