Have you ever wondered what the 2020 NBA season would look like? Who would win MVP, Coach of the year… etc? Who would be the NBA champions, and who would be sitting at the bottom, hoping for a lottery pick?
Well, look no further. Thanks to NBA 2k17s simulation system, we can simulate our way through the 2020 season and answer some pretty interesting questions.
Using the official 2k roster, here’s what happened when we simulated through 2020:
Who’s the Worst?
Believe it or not, 2k17 has the Philadelphia 76ers making the SEVENTH seed in the East by the end of the 2019-2020 season. That means they can’t possibly be the worst team in the league by then.
So if Philly’s not the worst, who is?
Who’s the Best?
Some may be shocked, other may not. But 2k had the Minnesota Timberwolves with the best overall record in the NBA at 56-26. Yes, apparently 2k has a strong faith in the T-Wolves and believes in their young talent to grow and mesh into something special.
Surprisingly though, 2k has both Zach LaVine and Gorgui Dieng on other teams. The Wolves, of course led by Towns and Wiggins, also have Eric Bledsoe, Nick Young, Kris Dunn, and Tyus Jones that together, seem to form a pretty elite bunch.
The reign of Steph and LeBron officially comes to an end in 2020. Kawhi Leonard is the new sheriff in town, and is basically the only reason the Spurs are relevant.
His stats for the year were 27.4 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, 5.5 assists per game, and 3.3 steals. Pretty mind numbing stats for ay player. Safe to say that it’s not impossible to imagine Kawhi putting up those numbers… but he’s not quite there yet. Interestingly enough though, 2k has Kevin Durant winning THREE TIMES in a row before Kawhi takes it in 2020. I know, CRAZY right?
Defensive Player of The Year
Hang on to your seats, folks…this one’s wild. If anybody keeps in touch with High School prospects, you may be familiar with this name. For everyone else, this one will be foreign to you.
BUT, the 2020 defensive player of the year is... Bol Bol. Yeah, I know. For the 2k simulation, I used fan created draft prospects, so yes Bol Bol is an actual player. Currently he plays for Bishop Miege High School and, at 16 years old, is one of the biggest high school prospects in the nation.
In 2020, however, 2k says he will go on to win Defensive Player of the Year as a member of the New York Knicks.
Most Improved Player
The Pelicans have one hell of a year in 2020. Not only does Tyreke get crowned as the Sixth man of the year back to back times, but Zach LaVine wins the Most Improved Player Award. At 17.8 points per game, he’s right behind AD in his teams scoring average.
LaVine and Davis don’t seem like a great pairing on paper, but somehow 2k predicts these two will work. well together.
Sixth Man of The Year
Who remembers how good Tyreke Evans used to be? He was hyped up as one of the best young talents in the game. Well, in 2k17, he not only becomes sixth man of the year in 2020, he does it back to back times. His stats include 13.8 points per game, 3.9 points per game, and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Even with those numbers, though, the Pelicans STILL do not find themselves in the playoffs. At this rate, Anthony Davis may never get a ring.
Coach of The Year
Looks like Stan Van Gundy makes quite a year for himself in the 2019-2020 season. He wins Coach of the Year, leading the Detroit Pistons to the best record in the East, at 55-27.
The thing here is, Detroit didn’t really add anybody special. So, maybe Gundy really deserved that trophy after all. Oh, and you know all those talks about a Rick Rubio trade? Somehow, the Pistons got Rubio while still keeping Reggie. Pretty cool stuff, huh?
2020 NBA CHAMPION
TRUST THE PROCESS?! No, haha, it’s not the Sixers. But the result may be just as surprising. In 2020, 2k randomly had the Hawks winning in all in 7 games agains the L.A. Clippers. I say trust the process though, because the Hawks made their run not with Dwight Howard, but with Joel Embiid.
Yes, a 26 year old Embiid finally completes his NBA success with a ring. By his side, he was joined by Seth(not Steph) Curry, Nikola Vucevic, and Greg Monroe.
Yeah, somehow 3 star centers win an NBA championship while their on the same team. But, whatever works, right?!
*Bonus* Warriors and Cavs?
So, in real life, the Warriors and Cavaliers are the teams to beat. But in 2k, neither team makes it past the second round. The Warriors lose to the Spurs, and the Cavs get bested by the Hawks.
I guess a 35 year old LeBron James and a 32 year old Steph Curry just can’t produce the same magic they could nowadays.
