Top 10 Broke NBA Stars Who Lost Everything

Fadeaway World

Fadeaway World

Before this new kind of NBA player like LeBron James and Steph Curry, NBA stars weren’t those "stay-at-home and let’s go to church on Sunday" kind of guys, as the best players in the world were always being linked with the Hip-Hop lifestyle and everything it came with it: partying, dressing like a thug, gambling and women, a lot of women.

On top of that, many basketball stars came from broken homes and bad neighborhoods, so after they achieved their star status and earned a HUGE paycheck on a monthly basis, several of them were completely overwhelmed with the amount of cash they had and managed it quite poorly.

Various guys come from problematic environments and can tell a lot of great stories about overcoming adversity, just to watch all their money slip once again through their hands. So, let’s take a look at the top 10 broke NBA stars and how they manage to blow their entire fortune in a heartbeat.

10. Charles Barkley - $40,000,000

Chuck has always been one of the biggest douchebags in history, and if he would’ve stuck to playing basketball and tried to be more disciplined and calm off the court, maybe he wouldn’t have to be forced to talk trash on national television alongside Shaquille O’Neal.

Barkley was always partying, drinking nonstop, and of course, gambling; losing 10 million dollars in 2006 alone. Fortunately for him, he’s managed to get back on his feet and is allegedly not gambling and partying anymore...

9. Dennis Rodman - $50,000,000

Rodman was one of the main performers of the 90s, both on and off the court. His constant public apparitions and struggles with his private life made him enter a never ending spiral of self-destruction. When he finally reached rock bottom, he couldn’t even pay his child support.

A very sad way to end for a Hall of Famer and one of the best rebounders and defenders the game has seen, not to mention a 5 time NBA Champion.

8. Kenny Anderson - $60,000,000

Anderson was one of the most consistent and reliable players through his 14-year career in the NBA. Nevertheless, apparently he never heard of the word “condom”, as he saw his fortune (that went as high as 60+ million dollars) disappear before his eyes due to child support, as Kenny had 7 kids from 5 different gals.

Finally, Anderson went back to school and finished his studies and made a living out of his career.

7. Eddy Curry - $70,000,000

Curry earned a lot of cash through his NBA career, although some terrible investing decisions and a huge debt to All-Star Capital made him lose every single dime, and even his house a couple of years ago due to bankruptcy.

He even had to face a judge as he couldn’t pay his loan due to its absurd 85% interest rate, watching his entire fortune disappear in the blink of an eye.

6. Derrick Coleman - $91,000,000

The former power forward for the Nets, Sixers, Hornets and Pistons, former number 1 pick and former Rookie of the Year is also a former millionaire, as D.C was never able to live up to the hype that surrounded him (even with his lifetime averages of 16.5 points and 9.3 boards per game), and he made all his money go to waste with poor real estate investment.

5. Shawn Kemp - $92,000,000

Kemp was one of the most physical and dominant players the league ever saw during his Seattle Supersonic tenure, and he even managed to create a very decent 90+ million dollar fortune just with his NBA salary.

Nevertheless, some drug problems, a lot of trouble with endorsements, and paying child support to 6 different ladies, made the Reign Man lose every single penny.

4. Latrell Sprewell - $100,000,000

Sprewell was one of the most famous players in the league during his stint with the New York Knicks, being a prolific and impressive scorer, owning shoe deals and having kids all over the world copy his hairstyle.

Nevertheless, his turning down of a 21 million deal with the Timberwolves (where he would continue to play with Kevin Garnett and Sam Cassell) was the worst professional decision he ever made, as he never set foot on an NBA court once again and he had to let go of all of his properties, including his house and yacht.

3. Vin Baker - $100,000,000

Baker went so broke so fast and so dramatically that he even had a documentary about him called “Broke”. Vin was completely ripped off by his so-called friends, and he wasted thousands of dollars on booze due to his alcoholism, to go along with several bad investments, throwing more than one hundred million dollars off-board in a heartbeat.

A couple of years ago, the 4-time All-Star was even working at a Starbucks coffee shop. That’s just sad man.

2. Antoine Walker - $110,000,000

Through his entire NBA Career, the former Kentucky Wildcat Antoine Walker put his hands around more than a hundred million dollars. Nevertheless, his poor judgment made him blow every dollar, giving away expensive properties to his brothers and his mother, spending thousands of dollars in expensive clothes to be worn just once, and struggling with alcoholism and gambling through most of his career.

1. Allen Iverson - $200,000,000

The Answer could’ve been the best player in league history if it wasn’t for his misjudgment, lack of discipline and struggles with gambling, alcohol and the law. AI came from a broken home and even did some time for a crime that he didn’t do, so the first thing he did when he got his big paycheck from Reebok was spend non-stop.

Cars, jewelry, clothes and partying made one of the best players in the world go broke, and we’ll never know what could’ve been of him if he weren’t so immature.
