Following the retirement of San Antonio Spurs icon Tim Duncan, Paul Pierce is one of three players drafted before 2000 remaining in the NBA, along with Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki and Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Garnett. It doesn’t sound like Pierce will be the first of the three to retire. Nothing official, but person close to Paul Pierce says he intends to play next season.
Paul joined the Los Angeles Clippers in last year’s offseason, to win a championship. The plan didn’t go well, as their two biggest stars, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, got injured in the first round of the playoffs against Portland Trail Blazers.
The media asked him directly if he would take another season, which would be his 19th season in the NBA, but said it was a “50/50”.
If “The Truth” decides to play one more year, he would play as a 39-year-old man. I’m not saying he would be embarrassing to watch, I’m just saying that he doesn’t get younger for every season he is passing.
The only thing he has done for the Clippers this season, is actually just shooting 3’s, and he’s not even a top 3 shooter on the L.A. team. He received only a few minutes this season for the Los Angeles Clippers. He only averaged 18.1 minutes per game while playing 68 games this season and having 6.1 points per game.
“Paul Pierce was crying after the game. He said he's had his heart broken 17 times.” - Anne M. Peterson
The only thing he plays for right now is a ring, but then should the Clippers really add some credible complementary pieces to their group of guys on the team.
Stars like Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and J.J. Redick could make something special, if the team can get some reliable players to the bench.
Los Angeles Clippers had a really unlucky first round playoff series last year, but after Golden State signed Kevin Durant, it's very difficult to beat a starting lineup with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green.
Hovewer, the Spurs signed Pau Gasol and they also have very respectable lineup with him, LaMarcus Aldridge, Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker.
What if Kevin Durant' decision directly affected Paul Pierce' decision about retirement? His chance to win another NBA Championship is a very slim because of the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs.
After Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan, we have only a few old school superstars in the NBA: Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Manu Ginobili, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, etc...
Who is the next?
