On October 17, 2005, NBA League invented one new rule that changed a look of the NBA permanently. It was a dress code rule. No more baggy jeans. No more baseball caps. No more gym suits. No more throwback jerseys. No more oversized necklaces. Only the business-casual attire. This rule referred to all NBA and NBDL players. They were expected to wear business cloth while participating in the team and NBA activities. Arrival to the game, the departure from the game, giving interviews, doing promotions and other related events.
This policy caused a storm in the NBA. League's goal was to improve the image of whole NBA, after the biggest brawl in the NBA history between Pistons and Pacers in 2004. Also, they wanted to distance from its then hip-hop image. There were many opposition arguments and players who were strongly against this rule. In the joke, this rule was called "A.I. rule" by Philadelphia 76ers player Allen Iverson. There were thoughts that this rule is a racist and against hip-hop culture.
Iverson also said one time, "the dress code is not who I am and doesn't allow me to express myself." Andre Iguodala also confirmed that "the Answer" wasn't a fan of this rule. "Allen just wanted to be comfortable. He wasn't trying to just be a rebel without a cause. He was like, 'I just want to be comfortable. I just want to go to the game and play basketball.' He didn't want to be uptight or feel restricted. "You watched him play and his style was to be able to freelance and move carefree, just be comfortable in his own world. He said, 'When I do that, I don't want to be restricted with a tie or collar on my neck.' "
