There’s been a lot of speculation circulating around Kawhi Leonard, his injury, and his relationship with the San Antonio Spurs.

Official team press releases state that Kawhi is merely struggling with his right quad injury, and doesn’t feel confident enough to return for the Spurs, even when they were running a real risk to miss the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

Other reports stated that Kawhi didn’t trust the Spurs medical staff, which is why Leonard searched out a second opinion, even going as far as heading to New York to receive treatment with his own medical team.

Because of those reports, people began to think something was up between the Defensive Player of the Year and the Spurs front office, and that Kawhi was a good as gone once he hit free agency in 2020.

But this following theory has to be the craziest of them all.

The Spurs will be facing the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs this season after falling to seventh in the wild west, and with Steph Curry most likely sitting out the entire first round with a knee injury, many think the Spurs have a chance against the defending champs.

If you cast your mind back to last year’s playoffs, you may remember that Kawhi’s original ankle injury was caused by Warriors bigman Zaza Pachulia, which lead to the Warriors sweeping the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

So what if Kawhi sat out this whole time just so he could exact revenge against Golden State in the first round without Curry?

That’s exactly what some conspiracy theorists are suggesting.

It’s as far-fetched and crazy as it sounds, and it’s a real possibility Kawhi may not even return for the Spurs playoff run this post-season, rendering the entire theory pointless.

But if Leonard does happen to come back to face the Warriors and leads them to a first round upset, we all know why.
