The NBA 2K series is one of the best basketball video game franchises in history, continually releasing a quality basketball game year after year, pushing the envelope when it comes to sports games as a whole. But NBA 2K can also be an extremely frustrating endevour as well, and that’s no different in 2K’s newest release, 2K18.
Every year there are a few players who are almost unusable due to the mechanics of the game, as you’re unable to play just like these players in real life because of 2K’s gameplay, which is aggravating, to say the least. More often than not, these players continue to be unusable each year, as the core gameplay of 2K rarely changes.
So today, we’ll be showcasing 5 players you’ll hate to play with in 2K18. Try to avoid these players at all costs.
Don’t get me wrong, DeRozan is a great player in real life, as are all of the players on this list, but DeMar is a nightmare to use in 2K if you want to play realistically.
DeMar’s athleticism and dunk ratings are his biggest assets in 2K18, as you’re almost able to score at will when driving into the paint. The problems arise when you step out of the paint.
Because of his real-life playstyle, DeRozan’s three-point ratings are less than great for a shooting guard, meaning DeMar won’t be dropping 3-5 threes a game for you. When it comes to his mid-range game, his ratings are among the best in the game, but because of 2K’s mechanics, mid-range pull-ups — something the Toronto Raptors shooting guard is unbelievable at — are one of the worst shots in the game to take, rendering DeMar’s biggest strength almost useless.
Eric Gordon was one of the most surprising players of last season, leading the league in three-pointers made at one stage, and running away with Sixth Man of the Year honors. The one thing that holds Gordon back in 2K18 however, is ironically, his jumpshot.
Gordon has one of the weirdest shooting forms in the game, releasing the ball at just above chest level, making his threes extremely easy to block for the other team unless he’s wide open. And don’t even think about pulling up in a defender’s face with him, as you’ll be eating Spalding a few seconds afterward.
Carmelo Anthony suffers from the same flaws as DeMar DeRozan, except slightly different.
Instead of being a skilled finisher around the rim, Anthony excels on the perimeter with his silky-smooth jumper, but if he’s not pulling up for three or spotting up, you’re going to have a bad time with Melo.
Carmelo is also an avid fan of the mid-range jumper, but thanks to 2K, it is almost impossible to replicate Anthony’s style of play in the game.
Thankfully, 2K have reworked the triple-threat system for 2K18, which is another area Melo excels at, so at least we can utilize those lovely jab steps.
This may be a bit of a controversial pick, but hear me out.
Derrick Rose is always going to be one of the most enjoyable players to use in 2K, solely because of his speed, quick handles, and athleticism, but in 2K18, if you wanted to use Rose just like his prime years in Chicago, you’re going to be in for a shock.
2K have reworked the layup system for 2K18, removing the layup meter, but still requiring the player to time their layups to have success with them. This makes hitting layups, especially contested ones at the rim, almost impossible.
Rose was famous for his circus finishes at the cup in his prime, and even still to this day, but with the new layup system in place, you can expect to miss a ton of shots at the hoop this year.
Who would have thought that two Cavs would be rounding out this top 5?
This is a selection that almost doesn’t need to be explained. Despite his insane speed and agility, Isaiah Thomas is one of the worst players to use in 2K18.
Thomas is rated an 89 in this year’s game, but that overall definitely can’t make up for IT’s small stature, which proves to be a massive disadvantage in 2K.
You can forget trying to replicate Thomas’ crafty finishes at the rim over and around taller defenders, as the new layup system coupled with Isaiah’s 5’9 frame makes getting blocked almost a certainty if there’s a defender within a 5ft radius. Not to mention his defensive abilities, which render him a sitting duck when defending the game’s best point guards.
