After making a lot of noise in the free agency with Gordon Hayward’s signing, it seems like the Boston Celtics are ready to pursue yet another Western Conference All-Star to try and end Cleveland’s dominance in the East and take another trip to the NBA Finals.
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Mannix:
One player worth keeping an eye on, two league executives told The Vertical: Memphis’ Marc Gasol. The Grizzlies lost Zach Randolph, Tony Allen could be next out the door, and if you were filling out your Western Conference playoff bracket today, Memphis probably wouldn’t be in it. Would the Grizz move the 32-year-old Gasol for a ready-made rebuilding package of players and picks? Would Boston – which has to be wary of putting together a team that would beat Cleveland but still get pulverized by Golden State – be interested? Again, worth watching.
Brad Stevens had been quite successful on the board of the Celtics, managing to compete despite not having the best roster in the East and quietly building a very solid squad alongside basketball mastermind Danny Ainge, who’s determined to get Boston back at the top of basketball elite.
And now, after drafting standout prospect Jayson Tatum and finally landing Hayward, the Celtics are keen to bring Marc Gasol on board to share the frontcourt with Al Horford and create yet another “fab four” squad with Isaiah Thomas also on board.
Of course, this move would mean to give up some assets, but with the Grizzlies already losing Zach Randolph and most likely losing Vince Carter and Tony Allen as well, they’d probably better off tanking than trying to compete in the fierce Western Conference.
Apparently, some guys would be on this reported trade package, with the Celtics more than ready to deal Jae Crowder and also willing to let both Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley go to make numbers work for them.
This would definitely take a huge toll on Boston’s defensive schemes, but considering how defensive minded the Grizzlies have always been, it’d be a pretty attractive deal for them, and if you put a couple of picks on the table it’ll be very hard to refuse considering Marc Gasol is already 32 years old.
Boston Celtics could offer two trade packages for Marc Gasol.
Trade Package No. 2: Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, 1st Round Pick
We’ll have to wait and see, but this move would make a lot of sense for both parties, so let’s sit down and hope for the best for everybody.
