Isaiah Thomas’ season got off to a very bad start with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team where he didn’t even want to play to begin with, just to be mistreated as the team’s scapegoat amid their recent crisis.
Furthermore, the Cavs just dealt him on a salary dump move to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he’s set to be Lonzo Ball’s substitute, something quite humiliating considering he was an already established baller.
Thomas’ NBA journey has been full of obstacles but he’s always known how to overcome them, and with him set to become an unrestricted free agent, we’re going to let you know the top 5 best destinations for him to get back on his feet.
5. Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns just acquired Elfrid Payton from the Orlando Magic, so he may shift to the team’s second unit while Thomas leads the way for the team that let him walk to the Boston Celtics, a familiar environment.
On the other hand, a Devin Booker – Isaiah Thomas would be an offensive beauty but a defensive nightmare, so he could also play off the bench as he did at the beginning of his Boston stint, providing a lot of balance for the young Suns.
4. New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are going to try and make a huge push to keep DeMarcus Cousins aboard, and signing Isaiah Thomas may be a step in the right direction towards playoff contention and therefore, retaining Boogie.
That would mean Rajon Rondo would come off the bench and the Pelicans would feature a very nice starting 5 with Thomas, Davis, Cousins and Holiday, and they’d be instant contenders in the Western Conference upon his arrival.
3. Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers have really surprised everybody with their stellar play this season, being playoff contenders in the Eastern Conference despite having a youth plagued roster that seemed destined to tanking throughout the whole campaign.
Most of it has come thanks to Victor Oladipo’s great surge, and a backcourt featuring Oladipo and Thomas would be terrific and the Pacers would have a much-needed shooter from beyond the arc, something they’ve lacked all season except for Bogdanovic.
2. Orlando Magic
With Elfrid Payton heading towards the Phoenix Suns, the Orlando Magic if left alone without a starting caliber point guard, and we all know DJ Augustin isn’t there for the long run or capable of successfully running a team’s offense.
Thomas wouldn’t be playing for a contending team there but he’d have a lot of touches, and the Orlando Magic feature a very promising young core and are set to have a top 5 pick in this upcoming draft as well.
1. New York Knicks
The New York Knicks have a logjam at the point guard spot right now, but Frank Ntilikina isn’t anywhere near ready to lead the offense, while Mudiay is more of a trade candidate than an actual threat to get a grab onto the starting point guard spot.
With Thomas’ arrival, the Knicks would have yet another walking bucket beside Tim Hardaway JR, Michael Beasley and Kristaps Porzingis, and they could finally end that long playoff drought they’re going through.
