Celtics fans didn’t have much team to cheer for their acquisition of Kyrie Irving. Boston was just one passing physical away from closing the deal. Then the Cavs discovered just how serious Thomas’ injury was, and all that trade hype flew out the window.
It was reported earlier that the Cavs were seriously considering vetoing the trade if they didn’t get additional compensation. But the latest report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, claims that the Cavaliers don’t just want any additional guy, they have their eyes set on two particular players: Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
The two young guys don’t have a ton of experience playing NBA ball, but they’ve each shown flashes of stardom. Last season, Jaylen averaged 6.6 points per game with 2.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists. While those numbers don’t necessarily stand out to anyone, his poise and feel for the game didn’t go unnoticed. Not to mention his defensive versatility, which adds a lot of value to his name.
For Tatum, he’s yet to play any real NBA minutes. But during the NBA summer league, he was an MVP front runner. Showing he can create his own shots in a myriad of ways, Tatum proved the Celtics were right in picking him 3rd overall.
Now it looks like the Cavs have their eyes set on both of them. Of course, they’ll only get one, but that won’t make the decision any easier for the Celtics. In order to finish off this Kyrie deal, Boston may have to send one of their beloved youngsters flying to Cleveland. Which one they’ll actually choose is anyone’s guess, but no doubt it’ll be an important move for both sides.
