After news Kyrie Irving’s trade request went viral a few weeks ago, it’s been nothing but mayhem and chaos for the Cleveland Cavaliers. With a new GM, a lack of newly acquired talent, and LeBron’s possible departure next summer, the Cavs are on the verge of a serious collapse.

Even if they somehow manage to smooth things over with Irving, things will likely never be the same. And judging by the most recent reports, Cleveland is aware of their dire situation.

The original plan for the organization was to trade Kyrie for veteran stars and draft picks to surround LeBron James. That was the plan LeBron was committed to. But now, Cleveland seeks elite young talent for Kyrie, which is obviously not part of their original plan.

Specifically, the Cavaliers are eyeballing New York Knicks big man Kristaps Porzingis, according to ESPN reports. At just 22 years old in only his second season, Kristaps scored 18.1 points per game on 45% shooting with 7.2 rebounds and 2 blocks per game. Drafted 4th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, Kristaps is widely regarded as one of the best young talents the league has to offer.

Obviously, the Knicks won’t give him up easily. Although the price tag has been high for KP all year long, the Cavaliers have a good shot at getting him if they’re willing to part with enough of their own pieces to get him.

This sudden push for young talent (and taste for KP) is all inspired by fear of LeBon James’ possible departure after next season. In fact, the team is holding these trades talks under the assumption James will be gone in 2018. The organization is essentially “preparing” itself for a rebuild, much like the Boston Celtics did in 2013 when they traded Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to the Brooklyn Nets.

Nobody’s quite sure how all of this will end. Can Kyrie work things out with the Cavs? Will LeBron be happy with the ending? Will Cleveland, or Kyrie, get the trade they desire?

So many questions remain unanswered as the summer pushes to a close. And even though the saga is far from over, the pieces of this puzzle are finally coming together. And it looks like New York, and Kristaps Porzingis could be a part of that. All it’ll take now is the right offer.
