Derrick Rose In “Serious Talks” With A Contender Derrick Rose is one of the top free agents left on the market and he may land somewhere completely unexpected. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, Derrick Rose and the Cleveland Cavaliers are nearing an agreement on a 1-year deal.
This is quite a power play for Cleveland. If they can get a former MVP in Derrick Rose as their backup point guard, then maybe LeBron will finally get the playmaker he has demanded.
It is no secret that Derrick Rose is made of glass. However, he is coming off sort of a comeback campaign with the New York Knicks, where he averaged 18 ppg, 4.4 apg, and 3.8 rpg on 47% shooting. The downside is that Rose only played a total of 64 games and hasn’t played more than 70 games since the 2010-11 season. This is an eventual low-risk, high reward move for Cleveland.
At this point, they need to show LeBron James that they are serious about closing the gap between them and Golden State. That gap is approaching galaxy size, but this might shrink it slightly. They would need Derrick Rose to have a Sixth Man of The Year type of campaign and have great durability during the 2017-18 season.
This move along with the signings of Cedi Osman, Jeff Green, and Jose Calderon would make the Cavaliers a much deeper squad. It’s all up to Derrick Rose now. Does he want to chase rings at this stage of his career? Does he want to play off of the bench for the first time in his 9 year career? The cards are in your hands, Mr. Rose. Do what you will.
