Fadeaway World

The San Antonio Spurs renounced their rights on a restricted free agent, Jonathon Simmons. Thus making him one of the best remaining unrestricted free agents on the market. Simmons has all the tools to be a great player in this league, but as of right now he is a raw talent with a great amount of upside. Best case scenario, Simmons could become an All-Defensive Team quality player in a few years with his hustle and length.

Here are the 3 destinations that would be great fits for Jonathon Simmons.

3. New York Knicks

The New York Knicks best direction to go in is a full-scale rebuild. Targeting prospects that will create a youth movement and embody long term upside is a recipe for this rebuild. First, they need to let go of Carmelo Anthony and trade him to Houston. They need to get rid any grand delusions that they will be able to assimilate Anthony into any of their long term plans. Second, they need to set up a meeting with Jonathon Simmons and sell him on joining this youth movement.

A potential core of Porzingis, Hernangomez, Simmons and Hardaway Jr. could have promising results. Simmons would bring a type of attitude and hustle that is contagious and critical for a rebuilding ball club to gain. That attitude can be the difference in winning ball games.

2. Brooklyn Nets

The last few seasons the Brooklyn Nets have bided high on restricted free agents such as Allen Crabbe, Tyler Johnson, and most recently Otto Porter. All of the other teams decided to match those offer sheets, leaving the Nets with nothing to show for it. The Brooklyn Nets have plenty of cap space to offer big money at any of the top remaining free agents. If they don’t use the money that they have, then they’ll ultimately lose it. Right now it seems like they have a backcourt of Jeremy Lin and D’Angelo Russell that they are content with. So, go out get another quality wing player to develop. What better on the market than Jonathon Simmons? He could be a starting SF or the sixth man off the bench. No doubt, he’d be in the running for Sixth Man of the Year instantly.

Getting Simmons would be the first smart decision Brooklyn has made in a long time in the off-season. It wouldn’t immediately undo the harm of their trade with Boston, but it would help them get younger since they lack top draft picks to do that through the draft. That moment we all realize, Boston has their pick next year too. Man, Danny Ainge committed the mugging of the decade.

1. Dallas Mavericks

According to Mike Fisher of CBS Sports, there are reports out that the Dallas Mavericks are pursuing Jonathon Simmons. Jonathon Simmons is due for a payday after being on two minimum contracts in his previous two years in the league. Is Dallas willing to pay up to sign Jonathon Simmons and keep restricted free agent, Nerlens Noel? Mike Fisher was told that the Mavericks are “continuing to weigh the merit of a Jonathon Simmons pursuit”. Assuming, that the Dallas Mavericks are able to get their finances in order and they are able to sign both Noel and Simmons, here is what their new lineup would look like.

Imagine a lineup of Dennis Smith Jr., Jonathon Simmons, Harrison Barnes, Dirk Nowitzki, and Nerlens Noel with names like Yogi Ferrell, Seth Curry, Wesley Matthews, Dwight Powell and Jonathon Motley coming off the bench. I don’t know about you, but that is a very nice group of talent. They could easily for the 7th or 8th seeds in the Western Conference. It’d be great to see the future Hall of Famer, Dirk Nowitzki finish his career in the playoffs.

No matter, what team decides to snatch up the talent of Jonathon Simmons, they are getting a great young player. At 27 years old, Simmons is about to enter the prime of his career and coming off a great playoff run with the San Antonio Spurs. In which, he saw starting minutes once Kawhi Leonard went down in the Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors. He matched his Career high in that series with 20 points. During the postseason as a whole, Simmons averaged 10.5 ppg, 1.9 rpg, and 1.9 apg on 45% shooting overall including 35% from 3.
