Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA basketball legendary center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has come out with a scathing review of LaVar Ball, saying outspoken parents such as Ball are bad for college basketball because they create a “huckster show.”

This past Saturday, Abdul-Jabbar made an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic, a Philadelphia sports radio show, where he was asked a range of questions, including those relating to fellow UCLA Bruin Lonzo Ball, and of course, his father LaVar.

“Everybody knows about his sons because he has been able to hype them. But I don’t think that’s good for college basketball,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “College basketball is starting to look like a…it doesn’t look good. It looks like it’s a huckster show. And that bothers me, you know. You have people going those lengths to promote their kids. I don’t get it.”

It looks like Kareem isn’t a fan of LaVar’s antics, such as claiming he could beat Michael Jordan one-on-one, and also claiming that Lonzo was already better than two-time MVP Stephen Curry before even setting foot in the NBA.

Kareem was also asked about his opinion on the infamous ‘one-and-done’ rule the NBA employs on college prospects, something he also wasn’t a fan of.

“One-and-dones doesn’t make any sense to me,” he said. “To have somebody come and be on campus for six months and play a basketball season, what is that? It’s strange and it’s not good for the college game, and it hasn’t been good for the pro game. I think they better find a different way of dealing with those issues.”

To address Abdul-Jabbar’s concerns, he may be happy to learn that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is pondering making changes to the one-and-done college format. However, he may be slightly less happy to learn that it doesn’t seem likely LaVar Ball will fall out of the public eye anytime soon, with his son Lonzo a likely top 3 pick in this year’s NBA draft, with his two younger sons, LiAngelo and LaMelo yet to arrive onto the college scene.

Best of luck Kareem.
