Fadeaway World

It all started when Phil Jackson gave Carmelo a 5 Year $124 Million contract extension 2 years ago, nothing bad with that. Carmelo came in mid 2010-11 season, he was 26 years old, immediately started contributing to the Knick ensuring them a playoff spot and guiding them atop the basketball world once again. The Knicks have been Forbes most valuable basketball franchise for years, New York is one of the biggest markets in the world and fans wanted Melo. I mean, Carmelo at the time of his contract extension was coming off a 28 and 27 PPG season and was an Elite player.

Everything was going well until Phil came in 2014. Hired Fisher as a coach, didn’t work. Brought in Brandon Jennings, Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah in the offseason hasn’t worked. The best thing that occurred even though at the time seemed as the worst pick up was, drafting Kristaps Porzingis. Fans and Management including coaching staff have now become frustrated with Melo, but in reality the Knicks don’t have a direction other than Kristaps.

Dan Feldman with NBC Sports gave this quote from Knicks reporter, Ian Begley, just a short time ago:

“The Knicks shopped Anthony in trade talks before the deadline and, barring an unforeseen change of course, remain committed to moving Anthony in the offseason, per sources.”

It seems that despite Carmelo’s public desire to stay, big time changes are coming to New York. Nobody knows exactly what that means yet, but one thing is seeming certain: The Knicks are moving on.

Now, the current problem with Melo’s contract extension is the “NO Trade Clause”, and we have to see how Phil Jackson will resolve this.

Banana Boat Option 1: Cleveland Cavaliers

So, will they trade Love and another asset for Carmelo? I don’t think it’s possible for the Cavs to have anything good to offer outside of Kevin Love for Carmelo unless 1 of 2 things. The Knicks are desperate to unload Carmelo so they can focus on building around Kristaps and don’t care for the assets in return with Love, maybe a multi-team trade or the Knicks will trade Carmelo and get average players, giving LeBron Melo while keeping Love.

Dwyane Wade will be a free agent, and if he decides to sign with the Cavs (mid-level contract), they will have a real banana boat!

Banana Boat Option 2: Los Angeles Clippers

It all goes back to how desperate or stupid can the Knicks be to rid Melo or how crafty can they get to receive what they need to compliment Porzingod. A team comprised of CP3 – Griffin – DeAndre – Melo would look very good, but what would the cost be? They have a few players on the current roster set for F.A. this year and their picks are not available this year, so who or what can they offer? Among the F.A. is Blake, so he is off the table and since Porzingis is a “Center” having another 7-foot center eliminates DeAndre.

How about a future pick, JJ Redick on sign and trade and Austin Rivers? Knicks would get a desirable bench scorer in JJ and a young guard with Rivers.

Banana Boat Option 3: Miami Heat

How about a return from an old friend to team up in a beachside large market? I’m talking about D-Wade. A dominant center (Whiteside) and a solid Guard (Dragic) have been vital to the turnaround season for the Heat who started 11-30 now currently seeking a playoff spot after going 23-6 since.

Let’s also not forget the possibility of having Chris Bosh as the 3rd Banana Boat Buddy making a stunning return and joining this new-old age Big 3. Wade – Bosh – Melo, Bron could get jealous haha.

4. Thunder’ Boat With Westbrook

It is a small market, but Durant proved, you don’t need that to be successful and exposure. Maybe the lights are getting too bright in New York for Melo and a smaller light would be best for him at this point in his career. Teamed up with an MVP-caliber Westbrook and knowing that Westbrook is willing to share the ball to someone with a shoot first mentality would be ideal.

Now here’s where it gets tricky, what do the Thunder have to offer? A definite first round pick and a few assets. The most important thing –  with Westbrook, he doesn’t need much to make anyone look good.

5. Houston Rockets and Run & Gun & Fun

Mike D’Antoni looks like a Coach of the Year largely in part to having players who fit his system including MVP candidate James Harden and high scoring 6th men Lou Williams and Eric Gordon coming off the bench.

Adding Melo to that “Run and Gun” system looks ideal since he does at times shoot blindly. Houston traded away their 1st round pick to LA, but they have several assets including Trevor Ariza and Patrick Beverley.

Harden spreads the floor with Melo and a strong bench would be a great team to watch, and the most important thing is they will play fast and the lineup with Harden, Gordon, Lou, Anderson and Melo can score from the downtown all season long.
